Bento Fun #91 - Cute Penguin
I have not been using a lot of hard boiled eggs in my bento lately as Darrius don’t really like to eat the yolks when I prepare the eggs this way. He prefers the half boiled, poached or those I pan fried but with the yolk still soft and gooey. The last bento with boiled eggs was done on Chinese New Year eve. That was more than 2 months ago!
I went to the market last week and bought some ‘kampung’ or farm run chicken eggs. The size is also much smaller than those eggs I bought for our own consumption or for making cupcakes. I also read somewhere that it is better to prepare eggs by boiling them rather than frying them so I thought I’ll just psycho Darrius later when I’m done cooking.
So, today being more adventurous, I prepare this little cute penguin bento which Darrius known as Pingu. The animation that he loves and will laugh like a crazy boy each time he watches. I told him this is Pingu’s girlfriend and Pingu is chasing after her…
.

.
This bento consist of one hard boiled egg wrapped with nori (the penguin), 2 pan-friend oyster sauce chicken drumlets, a small portion of steamed corn on the cob, a cherry tomato, some blanched broccoli and sweet peas. Some of the details are cut out from lunch sheets.
For the benefits of those of you who would like to do the penguin, I managed to snap some photos during the process…
First, you have to draw out the line for the face and body and fit it on to the egg. Use tracing paper if you have as the transparency will help you see the egg and it is easier to draw the line.
.

.
Then you cut the nori out and the larger piece will be used to wrap the egg. Try to do it when the egg is still warm as this will help the nori to stick onto the egg. Then use a piece of cling wrap and wrap around the egg.
.

.
Then you need to cut out the details for the face and placed them onto the egg before you wrap one more time to set their position. And you’re done!
.

.
And here my lil’ supporter posing with his bento…
.

.
Darrius refused to take the yolk initially but I told him the yolk is very nutritional and after he eats it he will be a clever boy… and he finished that! Wah so easy to trick him!
That’s all for today and not forgetting, Happy Bento-ing and Happy April Fool Day!
