Bento Fun #131 – Do, Re, Me…. Cheeeep!

Yippeee! Today is last day of school as Darrius’s school will be closed for Good Friday tomorrow. Good Friday is not a gazetted public holiday here but Darrius’s school is managed under the church so he gets to have an off day! :D

Leading up to Easter, I decided to do a batch of chickies less the eggs as I simply do not have the luxury to paint any eggs this time! Yeah, time is the major factor here as I only get max 45 minutes each morning (provided I wake up on time!) to do bento before the kids wake up.

Following my earlier post on the ‘fruit balls’ or ‘bread onigiri’, I decided to try a different stuffing this morning. Instead of using cheese, I tried with the mini chicken cocktails – which were a little too big but I managed to hide the area where the seams met… :P

And here is today’s Do, Re, Me… chickieeeeeees!

It was quite fun making these little darlings. The shape of the mini cocktails does helped… at least I can get a standard size for all. I used a big circular cutter to cut the bread so I don’t have the 4 edges to fold in. I used another small heart shape cutter to cut out carrot for the combs and the feet of these chickees with cheese and nori for the eyes. And of course the cute heart picks to finished up the chickees’ beaks!

In the other section, I cut a few slices of nectarine that hubby brought back from US (even after 2 weeks, it still so crunchy!) and 2 yellow cherry tomatoes which Darrius loved.

There won’t be any bento posts next week (unless I am so hard working… which I doubt!) as we will be away in KL the whole of next week. That means, I’ll be on a one week bento break! :P

Here, wishing everyone a Happy Easter and happy holidays!

Happy bento-ing!!!!! :D

Yeapies – Thanks! You have a good week too! I know you’ll be busy with the girls… wishing them speedy recovery!

so to do this bread roll…just wrap a circular cut bread around the filling?? would aprpeciate if u got time to do a tuitorial. like the way u added the imprint for the wings, good thinking.

    • Angeleyes says:

Java – You’re very sharp in spotting the imprint of the wings!!! I purposely did not mention in my post. :D I don’t know when I’ll have the time to do tutorial but I’ll try to squeeze in one. If you want to try, it is like wrapping char-siew-pau… using a cling wrap to help you.

  3. This is just too cute! Yeah I have the same question as javapot, haha….And I have exactly the same thing in mind with javapot when my eyes first landed on your bento photo, the imprint wings! You are so creative on the details!

    • Angeleyes says:

KDW – Thanks! That’s why I put a side view of the bento so that you guys can see the imprints as well as to see the chickies’ beaks… hehhehe

    Thanks Lia!

Now I kinda get it. So it’s just a wraparound rather than squeezing the bread into a ball. Love the details of the chicky. You are just so good.

  8. Angeleyes says:

AMD – yeah… it is very easy… just use a clingy wrap, put your bread on it and whatever filling you want and wrap around just like doing the rice balls.

  9. HK Choo says:

Thanks for the idea, I tried my hands on them here:

HK Choo – Not bad! But you’ve got to control the amount of filling so all your bread balls come out same size! hehehehe okok, I know it is not easy! :P
