Bento Fun #167 – Orange Snails

Every morning Darrius will have a bottle of milk before he gets ready to go to school. Sometimes he will even falls back to sleep while sucking on the bottle! Ok, he is turning five end of this year so he should start switching to cup but I can’t see if that is a good move coz he is drinking his milk way too slow! Probably he will ditch the milk altogether which is something I don’t want to happen so soon. He still needs a lot of calcium from the milk.

This morning is no difference. He took almost 35 minutes to finish 8oz of milk with enlarged teat holes (yeah, I poked many holes!!!!!) *sigh* he is that slow!!! While he was still suckling there, he saw me packing his bento into his bag and he asked me ‘Mommy, what’s in my bento today?’ So I answered him nonchalantly ‘It is a snails bento’.

He perked up and asked ‘Like me ah? Slow like a snail?’ And I answered back ‘Yesh, just like you!’ :P

I bought a mini orange chocolate chips swiss roll together with the orange loaf the other day. I kept it inside the fridge and forgot all about it till last night when hubby went to ransack the fridge for the box of ‘cempedak’ which we bought back from one of the durian plantations we went to over the weekend.

In the box there are 2 slices of the orange swiss roll with chicken cocktails underneath secured with some spaghetti stripes. The ‘eyes’ are cut from balanced chicken cocktails and held up using another 2 spaghetti stripes with details of nori. Some strawberries, golden cherry tomatoes (hidden behind the snails) some endamame on skewers and dried blueberries on skewers.

I told him he has better eat up all the snails so he won’t be so slow any more! Let see if he buys my threat or not! :D

That’s all for today… hope you have fun bento-ing!

You are making snails too??? Ah… great minds think alike! hehehhhee
Actually SG also has many varieties of bread! Have you tried ST Moulin at Isetan? They have that brown rice bread
which we don’t have in Penang. I saw them sometimes when I’m in KL but I don’t pack bentos when I’m in KL so
      no chance to use.

Sometimes I will go check out interesting food around here but not all are suitable for bento.. some just too big so too much for Darrius.

I am at the dead end with Darrius’s milk drinking problems… I wonder when he will speed up too!

  6. SIG says:

Right after I posted this comment, I went to town and saw orange swiss rolls like yours! Yes I planned to make snails but no snail cookie cutter so see how. I will check out sun moulin if I do go town again. These days I seldom do.

    • Angeleyes says:

You don’t need any cookie cutter for the snail.
Just slice the swiss roll into 1″ thick can lioa…

  7. Jenny says:

Haha! Your DD is too cute! Have you tried cheese and yoghurt? My baby hates milk, but she can eat 3 slices of cheese at one time, if I allow her to do so. I love your snail… They look very happy in a bed of leaves. Hee hee…

Oh, my boy takes cheese and yogurt too but not everyday though coz cheese made him constipated and yogurt too sweet!

Agree with Jenny’s suggession. I hv a friend’s son whom hates milk too and he stopped milk since age 1 (he is 2.5 now) and she subs his cacium inatke by giving him cheese & yogurt daily and he is doing well with it.

Darrius don’t hate milk but I don’t want to make him hate it just because I stopped him from using his beloved bottle! hehehehe

    • Angeleyes says:

Ooo… your girl don’t have sweet tooth hah?

      • Jocelyn says:

Yes my girl hv sweet tooth but she just don’t like to eat cake n swiss roll. Even birthday cake, she at most eat 2-3 mouths then don’t want already…

        • Angeleyes says:

Ah… it’s ok if she don’t like sweet stuff… coz I believe once they go to school they will have unlimited of those! My boy was being bribed by the teachers when he first started attending kindy!
