Bento Fun #173 – 3 Lil’ Tangerines
Now I understood why Lia always have to make 3 onigiri for her double tiersĀ bento boxes. Well, it seems that 3 onigiri fits just nicely into those boxes, that’s why! Right Lia?
We can’t make too big and not too small and I can bet with you, controlling the size of onigiri is a huge challenge if you areĀ doing it free hand! Unlike Lia, I don’t own those rounded rice balls moulds which will be a great tool to use if I want all my rice balls to be of equal size. I made a few in the past too which coincidentally, there are always 3 rice balls in these double tiers box!
I still have plenty of pumpkin (because I bought the whole pumpkin) so I must make something of that color. Wanted to make some chicks but I can’t find my mould so have to do the regular round onigiri freehand. The only thing is, I flatten them a bit to look like tangerines. Was tempted to go pick the lime leaf for deco but killed the idea coz I saw some strangers sitting at the back of our house.
So, here is today’s lunch bento…
The color of the pumpkin is not as strong as I thought. It looked rather orangey to the naked eyes but after I download the photos, they looked rather pale. Anyway, will slowly go fix that (maybe I need a new camera!)
The details of the little tangerines are nori and I dabbed some strawberry jam on their cheeks coz I ran out of ketchup!
On the other tier, I packed a soy sauce drummet which was left over from last night dinner. There are some broccoli, pan fried prawns, a cherry tomato, some stir fried French beans with carrot slices in flower shape, a small section of corn on the cob and grapes.
Today is Friday and the kitchen is closed for dinner! Gonna go for a bite of burger tonight at Chilis. Hope you’ll have a wonderful weekend ahead!

I love them! So kawaii.
Thanks SIG!
yummy! you have little of everything in the 2nd tier! you too have a great weekend! cheers/karen =)
Thanks Karen! You have a lovely weekend too!
I always end up with three onigiris as well – how strange!! I never really noticed…I tried squeezing in four initially but it’s always so squashed in. I love double tiers as well, makes it easier to separate out the food
Love the pumpkin idea! It flavours the rice as well, maybe a little tumeric to help it along?

Hah! You too yeah? I love 2 tiers but it will be too much food for my boy if I prepare just a snack bento. That was why I only use the 2 tiers when I prepare meals for him so I can seperate the dishes and the rice for him. Less messy too.
Thanks for the tumeric idea… maybe I should try that one another day.
Hi little cuties! I like how just a simple different sized smile makes the little tangerines look so different!
Hey, wat were the strangers doin there?
Thanks Tona! Yeah, I was just trying to punch those nori out and play with the expressions.
Yes, you are absolutely right Alice. 3 are perfect for my bento box. Although if you have something smaller than you can made only 2 and fit perfectly in your bento box
It’s all depend on the sizes of the bento box. Your 3 little tangerines are so adorable … They looks chubby.

Yeah… for smaller boxes, I usually can fit 2 inside and for the 2 tiered, 3.
Guess that is a kind of rule… coz that is that much a person can eat! hehehehe
