Cocktail Bear Tutorial
There is no bento today since it is Thursday. Darrius gets a slice of cake in kindy so he will usually finish that up (I hardly give him cakes with cream!) and won’t have any space for bento. I only packed a small box of strawberries and dried blueberries for him if he thinks he is still hungry.
Since I am not packing any bentos, guess I should be doing something to guide those new bento-ists out there… something like a give back time!
Well, I am no expert myself but I did picked up quite a few tricks after learning from the different blogs ang books! I seldom have the chance to do sharing as I normally pack my bentos in a jiffy with max 45 mins in the early morning before I send Darrius off to school.I have a baby and I don’t have a maid!
The lesson for today is cocktail bear which you always see in my bentos. In my experience, bears are the most common ‘character’ in bentos. They appeal to both boys and girls as well as adults. And putting a bear in your bento will never go wrong! To do this cocktail bear, you don’t need that many tools either so it is always my favorite character (especially those last min ones!!!) to beautify my bentos.
Firstly, you sliced about a 1/4 off the chicken cocktail…
Then using the oval cutter to cut half on both side of the quarter chicken cocktail which will be the ‘ears’ for the bear…
Then you cut a small slit across the 3/4 part of chicken cocktail and slot in the ears…
Now… you can see both the ears!
For the bear’s muzzle, you use a another smaller oval cutter to cut on the cheese and another smallest oval cutter that you can find (optional) for the ears. Punch out nori details and stick on the bear face and tadaaa….
Very simple right?
I hope you find this tutorial useful though some of you may have came across this before as I am sure those veteran bento-ists may have posted something like this one up before or maybe you can find in some bento books too.
Hope you have fun bento-ing!

Keep the tutorials coming! I don’t follow many bento blogs and I see some in the Japanese blogs, but as usual they are all written in Japanese, so thank you for doing this. And where do you find such tiny mini cocktails?! Hahha. Adorable. I really would like those red sausages the Jap mums use but I have searched all over Singapore and can’t find them. So pretty in two tones.

Thanks SIG! Yeah, I will have problem reading those Japanese bento books myself! At least those websites I still
can use the translator to help me but they are always not so clear!
I can’t find those sausages in M’sia too. Found them in Perth but I think they are slightly different coz the skin tends to slide off after broiling.
Thanks for the tutorial, can’t wait to try it out. In KL, you can find this mini cocktail sausage is Carrefour and Giant hypermarket (as far as I know), but not sure can get in Penang…

This chicken cocktail I found at Jusco. In fact I think most major supermarkets has it. It is a deli stall owned by 5 Stars. They sell a varieties of chicken cocktails and sausages but mostly very bland colors unlike those Japanese ones.
Thank you for sharing. It’s indeed very helpful for new-bies like me..i’ve started packing bento for my daughter and your site has been on my “must-browse” list ever since.
In Jaya Jusco Klang, there’s a sausage kiosk under “5 Star” brand. They have mini sausages very similar to this. (also not sure if available in Penang O_0 )Gonna get some to try out the bear for my daughter’s bento tomorrow. ^^
Again, thank you for sharing.
Glad that the tutorial is helpful to you and hope your little girl will enjoy her bento more!
Yes, the chicken cocktail is from the 5 Stars deli stall in the supermarkets.
Yay, tutorial!
I always like your mini cocktail sausage bear! Shall go to Giant or Carrefour to look for it!

Thanks for sharing the tutorial with great step-by-step pictures. Can’t find that chubby mini cocktail sausage here until now. I need the chubby one not the skinny one LOL

Thanks Lia! Btw, I found another brand of these mini cocktails by ‘Farm’s Best’.
Maybe you can check if any of the supermarkets around your place selling them.
Did I hear Carrefour?? Will go check. I think there is a brand I can’t remember that is that name I’ve seen they sell it from a pushcart or stall.
