Bento Fun #181 – Simple ‘Karipap’ Flower
Initially I have no intention to pack any bento for Darrius to bring to school this morning. Then I saw the new tool which I’ve just acquired recently and it sort of ‘calling out’ to me to use it to make something!
What a lame excuse eh? (ö)
Since I don’t have that much of time in the morning now (very zombified as I am still not getting a good night sleep since Baby G is still as cranky as ever!) to come out with intricate bentos any more, I just make simple stuff but of course something that Darrius will want to eat! I made him some simple banana with chocolate sammies a few days back and he has been asking for chocolate filling sammies and so here they are…

I made some ‘karipap‘ (curry puff) styled pocket sammies using the Gardenia Butterscotch bread with chocolate chips filling. Arranged these sammies into a flower by fitting them into a silicon cup. To brighten it up, I slot in a golden cherry tomato in the centre. There are red cherry tomatoes, some raw celery sticks, some dried blueberries and a cheese stick cut into 4 sections. Don’t be surprised with the raw celery sticks… Darrius lurves munching on them coz they are sweet and crunchy!
Here is the above mentioned tool…

As it is near the Muslim’s New Year, most of the hypermarkets are stocking up cakes and cookies making tools/utensils. This was the smallest curry puff mold on sale. I first saw this bento mama showing some of the pocket sammies that she made and when I found this tool (similar to gyoza mold), I must get one and try it out myself! After all, it was so cheap! It only cost me 70 sen which is about US20 cent! Cheapest tool to date!
It was pretty easy to use too but I don’t have the correct size round cutter so the bread was either too big or too small to fit into the mold. I decided to use the mid size cutter and when I clip it together, there is a little excess on the simi-circle edge which I have to peel away.
This tool is good to make pocket sammies when the bread that I bought are too small for my regular pocket sammies molds which need to be a big square slice of bread.

I have this cutter “calling out” to me too whenever I shop at the aisles but never thought of what to do with it. I just recalled my mum used to used that as a “playdough mould” for us to play with. Thanks for sharing the idea, now I know what to do when it calls for me again. LOL!
