I think it is best if you start with a used one, an older version to understand and learn how to take photos and then you can buy a brand new one after you graduate as a beginner. My hubs got my a brand new Canon 7D for xmas 2011 but recently gotten stolen. :( I loved my camera! anyway, either one is great! they also have videos to teach you how to take photos online that you can learn!
